THE 60 SECOND PANIC THAT TRANSFORMED MY NETWORKING GAME

When I first started networking, I would show up to events with clammy hands and heart palpitations. The anxiety was REAL. What if no one talks to me? Do I just interrupt a group and introduce myself? The drinks bar was my friend! 🍸

At one networking event in particular, each attendee had exactly 60 seconds to ‘pitch’ themselves before a bell would ring, signalling it was time to move on to the next person. By the time it was my turn, I was on the verge of a full-blown panic attack. To this day, I don’t remember a single word of what I said during those nerve-wracking 60 seconds!

Needless to say, I never went back to that event - or many like it. But despite the discomfort, that experience taught me two valuable lessons that have shaped how I approach networking today:

  1. Know Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP)
There’s nothing like an elevator pitch to force you to think critically about what sets you apart. That uncomfortable 60-second scramble made me realise I had no clear idea of my UVP at the time. Fast forward to today, if anyone asks me what Legalite’s UVP is, I can rattle it off confidently, no panic attacks necessary!

  2. Networking is About Creating Meaningful Connections
Being in a room with 30 people each giving a 60-second pitch doesn’t allow for any real connections to be made. It felt transactional and impersonal. I realised that meaningful networking isn’t about collecting business cards or delivering the perfect pitch. It’s about genuine conversations and building relationships. Now, I only attend networking events where I feel there’s an opportunity to connect on a deeper level - whether that’s through shared interests, collaborative opportunities, or simply good conversation.

Looking back, I’m grateful for those early, awkward experiences because they pushed me to refine my approach. Networking no longer feels like a chore or a source of anxiety. Instead, it’s an opportunity to meet inspiring people, share ideas, and create lasting connections—and that’s where the real value lies.
